Morgan Freeman is a great man but he has never seen my hole actually [/lol]

But yeah, I'm pretty sure for that I will study physics after my army, and I'm really into science. Great news for physics, even though it might not have anything important to do with real life.

By the way, I wonder one thing: if Higgs gives all particles the mass, how can it have weight itself, too? There are of course "two masses", the slow one (a heavier particle is hard to accerlate and stop) and theo ther one (the heavier particle has a bigger weight and bigger gravity).

It can self interact, so the Higgs Boson interacts with the Higgs Field too, giving itself mass. Fun stuff :D

Sounds more like a "God-mode" particle than a "God" particle then. I call hax!!!

But seriously, when you put it like that, it just boggles my mind.
Can you explain that? It seems I really don't understand the concept of mass then. Isn't mass connected to energy? And energy can't be created from nothing.. so how does something give itself mass? O_o

The difference is that when particles interact with fields, the bosons that do the "exchange" between the particle and field are virtual (ie they don't have the mass of the real particle, just enough mass to balance energy conservation).

So a real Higgs that gets made at the LHC interacts with the Higgs field via the exchange of virtual Higgs Bosons. It's all a bit hard to explain :p

Haha, that pic is how I feel too Marouan xD

Wikipedia doesn't seem to explain all of that... Would you have some links with proper explanations on all that stuff that someone with an interest in the subject could somehow understand?

Hehe, yeah, it all gets a bit tricky to explain. I'm sure there must be a popular science book about it.

If anyone wants more information about my kind of work there is a every-mans book that I read during my PhD:
http://press.princeton.edu/titles/8475.html

I think my dad read it, its at a level those who have an interest should be able to follow.

Hah, thanks. I'll see if I can get a copy of that, and give it a read during the holidays :)

Hahaha. Apart from the 2nd last one, I believe all are pretty serious.

I think the serious talk has finished, can we "Off-topic" this one too then ? :D

Since the Higgs boson is its own anti-particle, it's also the anti-God particle. Every numpty in the above jpeg -> mindblown.png.

Judgement day doesn't seem so worrying when you imagine it as a Higgs - AntiHiggs annihilation process. Oh no, a whole ~250GeV of energy released, WHAT EVER WILL WE DO???

I remember seeing this a while back, thought I'd share it, topical and Hitler, which is half of what I predicted in my first post!

Note: The TeVatron was the biggest Higgs search machine in the world until LHC took over, most people joined the LHC soon after :P

Post Teh Science Topik
So I thought we had one of these, but can't find it.

I haven't yet started reading those books you guys advised me, but I have them and am planning to any day now.

Tonight I saw the last 20 minutes of a show on relativity on National Geographic, and they were talking about this "latest theory" that the universe is actually a hologram. They spoke of it as if it's the latest fact, which made me think "bs show", but there was that black physicist who said that America is far behind when the Higg's Boson was found, so that made it more legit I guess.

So my question is... thoughts?
