Being an ex WoW-player I know each of those examples.
I hate that trend since nowadays many companies put that "push button - receive bacon"-mechanic before gameplay. I really enjoy indie games like Super Meat Boy and games I play intensely for couple of days and then forget about it after finishing (GTA, Dragon Age 1, Fallout III). They do naturally have some of those properties but they all have nice gameplay and a clear point when the game goes "Alright, that's it, if you're no achievement whore, bugger off."
And about the TM ladder system...
